Sustainability, sustain-ability, relates with the guarantee that today we assure the necessary resources for the survival of the future generations.

Having in account the building’s responsibility throughout all the impacts we cause to the environment, the inclusion of a ‘green’ concern in architecture design becomes essential, not only as construction while an isolated act, but also, and especially, during all its function lifetime. However, in the case of the Sustainable Architecture, how can one relate the idea of ‘sustainability’ with the architecture itself? How does this dichotomy between science and ‘architecture as an art form’ really work?

In this study, it is intended not only to approach the question of sustainability representation in buildings, but mainly to characterize two distinct forms of Sustainable Architecture, related not only by their formal characteristics, but also by their thinking and inherent philosophy.

On the other hand, it is intended to apply this reference to Portugal, comparing two distinct, representative buildings of these two types of Sustainable Architecture, resultants of different historical framings. This analysis, of an example of Traditional Portuguese Architecture (Low-Tech) and another of Modern Sustainable Architecture (Eco-Tech), is supported by dedicated software, so we can get results in what concerns their thermal behaviour.

In the end, a critical analysis is presented, querying the possibility of a ‘sustainable rehabilitation’ of the ‘population desert’ interior of the country, as a form of looking into our past for the solution to our future.

Sustentabilidade, capacidade de “suster”, relaciona-se com a garantia de que asseguramos hoje os recursos necessários para a sobrevivência das gerações futuras.

Tendo em conta a responsabilidade do ramo da construção na totalidade de impactos que causamos ao meio ambiente, torna-se imprescindível a inclusão de preocupações ambientais no acto de Projectar, não só enquanto construção como acto isolado, mas também, e especialmente, durante todo o seu tempo de vida. No entanto, no caso concreto da Arquitectura Sustentável, como se relaciona a ideia de sustentabilidade com o factor arquitectura? Como funciona esta dicotomia entre ciência e “arquitectura enquanto forma de arte”?

Neste estudo, pretende-se abordar não só, indirectamente, a questão da representação da sustentabilidade em edifícios, mas principalmente, caracterizar duas formas distintas de Arquitectura Sustentável, referindo não só as suas características formais, mas também a sua forma de pensar e filosofia inerente.

Por outro lado, pretende-se extrapolar esta referência para Portugal, comparando directamente dois edifícios distintos, representativos destas duas linhagens de Arquitectura Sustentável e resultantes de dois diferentes enquadramentos históricos. Esta análise, de um exemplo de Arquitectura Tradicional (Low-Tech) e outro de Arquitectura Sustentável contemporânea (Eco-Tech), apoia-se em software próprio para obter resultados no que diz respeito ao comportamento térmico destas habitações.

Por último, apresenta-se uma análise crítica que pondera a possibilidade de uma reabilitação sustentável do interior “populacionalmente desertificado” do país, procurando no nosso passado a solução para o nosso futuro.
